BRIDGING THEORY AND PRACTICE: ADVANCING CRISIS COMMUNICATION EDUCATION AT UNISZA

Introducing Simulation in Crisis Communication

In a meaningful collaboration with Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) last year, I had the opportunity to propose a real-world simulation concept to enhance how communication students are taught crisis communication. The idea was simple yet impactful: rather than relying solely on lectures or case studies, students would participate in a live crisis simulation exercise as part of their final assessment.

The goal was to immerse students in realistic crisis scenarios, helping them sharpen their decision-making, team coordination, and stakeholder messaging skills—just as they would in a real corporate or government crisis.

From Concept to Classroom—and Research Grant

Dr. Siti Zanariah, a dedicated academic in communication at UniSZA, embraced the proposal and incorporated it into her crisis communication course. The response from students was extraordinary.

This innovation soon evolved into a full-fledged research initiative. Dr. Siti was awarded a grant for her project, “Empowering Crisis Communication Teaching and Learning Through Simulation,” which focuses on the educational impact of immersive, scenario-based learning.

To complete the research, Dr. Siti invited me again for a follow-up interview to explore how we could further enhance and scale the impact of these simulations.

Exploring Forensic Linguistics Through a Communication Lens

Alongside this initiative, I was also approached by Dr. Nurshafawati Shafa, a colleague of Dr. Siti’s, who is currently leading a fascinating research project on forensic linguistics. Also supported by a research grant, her study explores how strategic communication and language techniques can improve practices within law enforcement, legal proceedings, and investigative reporting.

I was humbled to contribute insights from a communication practitioner’s perspective, focusing on how language shapes understanding, trust, and credibility in high-stakes environments. This intersection between linguistics and communication offers valuable lessons for those working in both academic and enforcement contexts.

Why Practitioner-Academic Collaboration Matters

These collaborations with UniSZA reaffirm a powerful truth: when academia and industry professionals work together, the result is stronger, more relevant learning experiences. Through projects like these, students gain more than theoretical knowledge—they build practical readiness for the fast-changing communication landscape.

It’s incredibly encouraging to see higher education institutions like UniSZA embracing this collaborative, future-focused approach. By integrating real-world insights into academic programs, they’re preparing graduates to become agile, confident, and capable communicators.

Looking Ahead

I’m truly excited to see where this journey will lead next. Whether through crisis communication simulations, forensic communication research, or new interdisciplinary initiatives, these partnerships pave the way for innovation in communication education.
