Congratulations to IIUM’s Department of Communication for Hosting COMETIC 2024!
A heartfelt congratulations to the Department of Communication at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for successfully organizing COMETIC 2024, held on 16th and 17th October at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC).
With the theme “Communication & Media Pause: Reflecting Values & Impacts,” the conference highlighted critical issues in the field. Topics included Media Integrity, Leadership in the Media Industry, Al Jazeera’s Role in Exposing the Gaza Genocide, the Changing Geopolitics of Global Communication, and Navigating Digital Disruption. Parallel sessions offered a wide range of perspectives on communication practices, making the event intellectually stimulating.
I was honoured to be invited to speak alongside the distinguished Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Syed Arabi Aidid, the 4th Rector of IIUM and a highly respected figure in Malaysian public relations, and En. Jaffri Amin Osman, President of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM). Together, we tackled the topic “Dilemmas in Crisis Communication: Balancing Transparency and Sensitivity.”
It was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeti Azreen, the discussion delved into key issues such as why organizations often repeat the same mistakes during crises, their preparedness and responsiveness, the delicate balance of information sharing, the role of CEOs during crises, and the essential requirements for effective crisis management. We also explored the unique challenges faced by PR practitioners when dealing with high-pressure situations.
