Industry-academia collaboration recognised for developing a practical and accessible approach to crisis communication learning.
WHITE & Associates is pleased to share that the Introduction to Crisis Communication Micro-Credential Programme, developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Languages and Communication, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), has received the Gold Award under the Micro-Credential (MC) Innovation Challenge at UniCeL 2026 – Next-Generation Pedagogy: Advancing Inclusive Education Through Innovation.
The recognition is particularly meaningful as the programme was evaluated by external judges from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The judges were impressed with the quality of the module and recognised the effort that went into its development.
For WHITE & Associates, the award is also an important recognition of what can be achieved when industry experience and academic expertise come together to create learning that is practical, relevant and accessible.
Bringing Crisis Communication Knowledge to a Wider Audience
Crisis communication is no longer a capability required only by large corporations or public relations departments. Organisations today operate in an environment where an operational incident, customer complaint, cyberattack, workplace accident or social media issue can quickly develop into a reputational crisis.
The speed at which information travels also means that organisations are increasingly expected to communicate quickly, accurately and responsibly when something goes wrong.
Recognising this need, the Introduction to Crisis Communication Micro-Credential was developed to provide learners with a practical introduction to the fundamentals of crisis communication.
Delivered online over one week, the programme is designed for learners who are looking for a flexible opportunity to develop or strengthen their professional knowledge without committing to a lengthy training programme.
The module introduces participants to three important areas:
- understanding what constitutes a crisis and how it differs from risks and issues;
- identifying and categorising different types of crises; and
- applying appropriate communication approaches when responding to a crisis.
The intention is not simply to introduce theories and definitions, but to help learners understand the basic building blocks that organisations need when preparing for and communicating during a crisis.
Combining Academic Knowledge with Industry Experience
One of the strengths of the programme is the collaboration behind its development.
UniSZA brings the academic and educational perspective, while WHITE & Associates contributes practical experience from the public relations, corporate communication and crisis communication environment.
This combination allows academic concepts to be connected more closely with situations that communication practitioners may encounter in the workplace.
For WHITE & Associates, this reflects an important principle in professional development: good training should not end with knowing what to do. Learners should also understand how to apply that knowledge when confronted with an actual communication challenge.
The Micro-Credential format also provides an opportunity to make professional learning more accessible. Practitioners who may not be able to attend longer courses can acquire focused knowledge in a particular area and build their expertise progressively.
Recognition Through the UniCeL 2026 Innovation Challenge
The programme was entered in the Micro-Credential Innovation Challenge at UniSZA’s UniCeL 2026.
Held under the theme “Next-Generation Pedagogy: Advancing Inclusive Education Through Innovation,” the challenge recognises innovation in the development and delivery of contemporary learning.
Receiving the Gold Award is therefore an encouraging endorsement of both the programme itself and the approach adopted in developing it.
More importantly, the recognition by external MQA judges provides valuable validation that a professionally focused programme developed through industry-academia collaboration can also meet high expectations in terms of learning quality and programme development.
Industry and Academia Can Create Better Professional Learning
The award represents more than an achievement for a single programme.
There has traditionally been discussion about the gap between what is taught in the classroom and what practitioners encounter in the workplace. Industry-academia collaboration provides an opportunity to narrow that gap.
Academic institutions contribute research, learning design and educational expertise. Industry practitioners contribute current experience, real-world challenges and an understanding of the competencies organisations require.
When these strengths are combined effectively, learners benefit.
This is particularly relevant to public relations and corporate communication, where the profession continues to change rapidly. Communication practitioners today must deal with increasingly complex stakeholder expectations, digital and social media, misinformation, reputational threats and crises that can develop within minutes.
Professional education must therefore continue to evolve alongside the industry.
A Meaningful Collaboration
WHITE & Associates would like to express our appreciation to Dr Siti Zanariah Yusoff of the Faculty of Languages and Communication, UniSZA, for inviting WHITE & Associates to be part of this initiative and for recognising the value that industry participation could bring to the programme.
Her commitment to bringing academia and industry together provided the foundation for this collaboration.
The Gold Award is an achievement that both teams can be proud of, but the greater value lies in having developed a programme that can continue to help learners and practitioners strengthen their understanding of crisis communication.
Building Crisis-Ready Communicators
At WHITE & Associates, we believe that effective crisis communication begins before a crisis happens.
Organisations need people who understand how crises develop, recognise when an issue is escalating, know what stakeholders need to hear and appreciate the importance of communicating with accuracy, empathy and confidence.
The Introduction to Crisis Communication Micro-Credential provides a starting point for developing these capabilities.
For communication practitioners, students and others interested in strengthening their knowledge of crisis communication, enrolment for the programme is available through UniSZA’s EduFlexS platform.
